It's been a long time

October 3rd, 2009 (03:11 pm)

current mood: cheerful
current song: Old Rod Stewart CDs

It's been over a year since I've posted here at LJ but I didn't give up checking in and commenting from time to time. Somehow after losing Bernie, I just didn't know what to write. It's been a difficult year (in a month) but I think I'm slowly coming out the other side. I owe a debt of gratitude to grandma_kate and to sheffers81 for being such prolific writers that I was always busy and in touch with fun, upbeat people. My thanks to both you ladies. You have both just finished massive pieces of work and my hat is off to you both. You deserve to be justly proud. Now that I've just renewed my LJ account for another year I owe it to myself to post more often and get back in touch.  I promise to try.  It's a rainy, miserable Saturday afternoon so I'm off to the kitchen to keep an eye on the spaghetti sauce I started a while ago--hours to simmer yet but it's a great day for it.

Home at Last!

September 20th, 2008 (07:10 pm)

Well, I was afraid to post the good news too soon, but after 4 plus days I can say that my husband, Bernie, came home from the hospital on Tuesday and he's still here! He's doing well and with medication the blood pressure seems to be under control.  He actually went out for an excursion to COSTCO with me today and then to Sears to visit some of his old work mates.  He tires easily but he was absolutely thrilled to be 'out and about' after the best part of two months of hospitalization.   The infection that caused the whole  problem in the first place is well on the mend  and he has a consult on Tuesday  with the surgeon to get her opinion.   He can't re-start the chemo  until  the abscess is completely healed or it could cause major problems.   So,  we're still hoping and praying that  it's just about healed since he's been off the chemo for about six weeks.  Not that I'm looking forward to his going through the chemo again but we can't let that nasty 'blob' in his tummy get active again.  Fingers crossed and hoping and praying that he's on the way to fighting again.

I have to acknowledge a group of ladies who are, beyond doubt, the best there is:cyclonejuliet ,sheffers81 ,grandma_kate androsathome.  Bern and I got the sweetest  get well card from them that made its way to us via three continents.  And as they know, it arrived a couple of days later than expected but it arrived on exactly the day I needed my friends to help me cope with waiting for some news about Bern.  You ladies rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Love you all!

Congratulations, Kate!

current mood: happy
current song: Red Sox Baseball

I would like to take this opportunity to wish congratulations and best wishes to my very dear friend, grandma_kate, as she celebrates three years cancer free!  Way to go, Kate! You have been such a caring source of hope, help and support to me as I try to help my husband who is just starting his journey down this road.  I hope you and dear Oatmeal enjoyed your celebration dinner this evening.  Can't wait to hear about it.

Just got Bernie home from the hospital this afternoon and he's thrilled to be home watching his beloved Red Sox (even though they're playing the A's tonight.  Sorry Kate, as I write this we're ahead by one run)  ;-)  He's done really well and except for being extremely tired, he feels pretty good.  It's good to have him home again.

Congrats again, Kate and many, many more!!

And the journey begins.....

July 15th, 2008 (08:36 pm)

current mood: optimistic

As some of you know, my husband was diagnosed with gastric cancer just over a month ago.  It was a bolt out of the blue and apparently very fast acting--he's probably had the mass around 4 to 6 months.  He's been poked, prodded and scoped from stem to stern and we just got the word today that after two more consults, he'll be ready to start the initial blast of chemo around the 28th of July.  He actually came home yesterday from his laparoscopy with 5 x 7 inch pictures of the thing-suitable for framing! ;-) Not really-he has to bring them to the next consult.  He just found out that after the initial dose, he'll be able to give himself the chemo dosage at home.  He's going in tomorrow for the catheter to allow him to do that.

This has been such an incredibly unexpected, scary, yet life-affirming experience.  In just one short month we have been shown just what our friends and family mean to us.  People have been so amazingly supportive and loving since the word got out, it's just amazing.  The fact that prayers and good wishes are coming our way from around the world is humbling and wonderful and we thank all of you who have been in touch to offer support.   The next six months are going to be very scary as is just about anything unknown.

So with an eye toward positive vibes, I'm going to retire my usual Trelawney icon from Prisoner of Azkaban because the future is NOT grim at all!  With the love and support we've received, we know it isn't.

Here's an interesting link that my son sent to me today.  There's a 10-minute YouTube video linked to it also.  Pretty interesting.

You scored as Neville Longbottom

You are Neville Longbottom. You come across as shy, quiet, and reserved. Underneath, you are deeply caring of your friends and/or family and would put yourself at risk to defend them, even though you would usually exclude yourself from arguments. You don't care much for competition or glory. Maintaining peace and justice are much more important to you.

Mostly Back

July 11th, 2007 (10:13 pm)

current mood: apathetic

Well, my system is back and (knock wood) OK.  The problem is I have to practically rebuild everything from the ground up.  Resetting passwords, rebuilding bookmarks--all totally gone!, and catching up with nearly 100 e-mails.  I guess it's a good way to clean stuff out.  If I don't remember I had it in my bookmarks, I guess I can afford to lose it.  ;-) My first priority is to get to the chapters that need beta work which I hope to have ready to return by Sunday.  I'll do my best-can't promise.   I won't post any spoilers, but I saw Order of the Phoenix tonight.  That cost me another night  of rebuilding, but worth it!

No News Yet

July 8th, 2007 (12:37 pm)

current location: Parents' house
current mood: morose

So far no good news with the virus/trojan horse problem.  My rig is with it's 3rd possible fixer and nothing yet.  I'm at my parents' house this morning so I thought I'd update those who may have an interest.  I'll get back to any  author whose work is 'on hold' ASAP.  I do apologize for the delay.  While I'm offline, I'm plotting unspeakable torture to the  'person' who  wrote the godforsaken thing that infected my computer--should our paths ever cross.

I am blessed by kind friends too

current song: morning birds chirping

If there are one or more people on your friends list who make your world a better place just because they exist, and whom you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

I copied this from grandma_kate's journal and I could not agree more. The last 2+ years as a beta reader and particularly the last 13 months as an LJ user have brought me into contact (some long term; some short) with some of the most intelligent, kind, funny and generous people I ever could have hoped to meet.  It has enriched my life beyond telling.
